Thailand is a friendly, fun-loving, exotic, cultured & historic; each of whose corners has something new to offers to its visitors. Though a perfectly planned itinerary helps a lot to enjoy it to the fullest during your getaway, but besides all this planning, there is one important thing that travelers must keep in mind before flying off to their dream destination or holiday. There are certain behavioral tips and etiquette that you need to follow to avoid any embarrassing situations. Given below are some of the behavioral tips to look after in Thailand:
Respect the Monarchy: The people of Thailand highly respect their monarchy and travelers or visitors are advised not to indulge into any kind of behavior that shows disrespect towards the Royals of Thailand.
Wear Proper Outfits: While visiting a sacred shrine travelers must dress properly to avoid unnecessary attention. Since the people of Thailand are highly cultured and religious, any kind of indecent behavior or outfits is banned for people entering the shrine. So, make sure to wear proper outfits so that you don’t have to face a no from the officials at the entrance. Wear something comfortable and appropriate that must cover your shoulders, midriff and knees.
Take off your shoes: Since the temples and monasteries are highly respected by the people of Thailand, you must make sure to remove your footwear outside the sacred complex, as a mark of respect. Try to wear something comfortable and nice, which can be easily removed before entering these sacred places. Also if you are entering a thai home, it is appreciated if you take off your shoes.
Respect Lord Buddha: Since the people of thai follow Buddhism majorly, you will surely find numerous images of Lord Buddha during your sightseeing, some small, some large, some placed at placid regions, some adorning giant temple complexes, but whatever it may be positioned, it is greatly honored by the thai. So, don’t show any kind of disrespect to avoid any problem. Don’t stand or try to climb or touch inappropriately any image to avoid any wrong message
Regard the Monks with great respect: Travelers can come across numerous thai monks, who are generally very smiling and patient, so if you come across a monk and receives a sweet smile, make sure to return it the same way rather than standing there startled. You can also bend down and join your hands before the monks to show respect. You can also offer something such as a good meal or some offering to the monks but that too with great respect. Also, ladies should avoid touching the monks and if wish to offer something, then must hand it over it first to a male, who can then offer it to the monks.
Greet with a Wai: Wai- a greeting gesture when both the palms of the hands are pressed facing each other, is the traditional form of greeting in Thailand. Though, some people won’t mind a handshake, but if you can greet them with a wai, then it is more appreciable. It is a great way to say thank you or goodbye.
Avoid touching someone on their head: Also, the head is considered the highest part of the body by the Thai people. So, avoid touching people on their head or passing something over someone’s head. You should also avoid pointing at something or someone with your feet as it is considered very rude and disrespectful.
No Public Display of Affection (PDA): Thailand is a complete no PDA, especially when you are out there in the city or enjoy a leisure walk near your hotel. Since it is considered indecent, so make sure to avoid any PDA with your partner and avoid the moral police.
