Given below are some useful tips for managing a travel with your infant.
Health
- Keep a first-aid kit handy so that you are able to deal with minor injuries or sickness while travelling. It is extremely important to carry prescription medicines for your infant even if they are needed occasionally.
- Prepare and keep handy a sheet that contains emergency information of your infant such as weight, height, medical conditions, if any, and prescribed drugs. Also add the contact information of the healthcare provider.
- If you are going out in the sun, do not forget to first apply a standard sunscreen lotion on your infant.
- The sunscreen should provide both UVB and UVA protection and must have at least SPF 15. Ideally, you should be applying a sunscreen with SPF 30.
- If you have purchased a seat on the airplane for your baby, bring along an FAA-approved car seat for your baby. That is the safest way to provide a seat for your baby in the airplane. You can bring along an FAA-approved car seat even if you have not purchased a seat.
Comfort and Food
- If you breastfeed your baby, make sure that during the flight, you stay hydrated. So, take adequate water, depending on the flight duration. You can also ask for water on board but it is ideal to refuse aerated drinks.
- If you do not breastfeed your baby, bring along with you the ready-to-use formula to feed your baby on the flight. Before you bring the formula-based drink, make sure to review the airline’s policy regarding formula-based liquids.
- Bring with you enough diapers that last at least till you reach your destination. Also bring along a diaper bag and a diaper lotion. The diaper lotion can be applied in case your baby develops any rash because of the diapers.
Gear for travel
- Have some big resealable plastic bags in the trunk of the car or the diaper bag. You can easily store messy things like dirty diapers, bibs and clothes.
- Umbrella strollers or lightweight strollers are specifically meant to sit babies who can sit up. Your baby can reasonably sit in and you can carry it along with you. It is not as cushy or comfortable as the bigger ones but is lightweight and easy to manage. Provided the airline policy allows it, you can carry it onboard and stow it in the overhead luggage compartment.
- If you want to keep your hands free, you can use the slings or front-carriers for your infant. In case your baby is a little bit on the heavier side, you can use those backpacks.
